Tammanna who was a great scholar and violinist and veena player in the royal court lost his means of livelihood. He took to coaching students in Sanskrit and the Vedas to support his family.
Young Venkatnath's power of eloquence, spiritual yearning, high caliber for learning the verses demonstrated great promise in the child. In the fifth year he was initiated into his studies, but Tammanna Bhatt didn't live long to see his son grow up into a great scholar. Venkatnath was entrusted to the care of his brother-in-law Lakshmi Narasimhacharya (sister's husband) by his brother, Gururaja. To the astonishmeat of all, Venkatanath drank in the essence of the Vedas, ashtadasapuranas and became a scholar of repute.
He was married early to Saraswathi, a virtuous lady who bore him a son, Lakshmi Narayana. Later, he was sent to Sri Sudheendra Thirtha, a renowned Madhva peetadhipathi (head of religions sect) of his day living at Kumbhakonam (in Tamil Nadu). His sharp intellect and exemplary humility soon drew him to the Acharya(guru\teacher). Venkatanath was awarded the title of Parimalacharya (scholar par excellence) by his guru for his commentary as the monumental treatise of Sri Sudha. By this time Venkatnath had already displayed his superior caliber with scholars and literary luminaries. He was awarded the title 'Bhattacharya' and called 'Venkata Bhatta'.
Despite his scholarship, Venkatnath led a life of poverty with his wife and son. And as misfortune would have it, they even lost the few household belongings. Grieving over the loss, he went with his family to his preceptor, Sri Sudheendra Tirtha who allowed them to stay at the mutt (a hindu monastery). Venkatanath spent his time happily writing books and teaching students. His spiritual inquiry, single-minded devotion and intellectual brilliance made him his guru's choice as his own successor- Peetadhipathi. He was asked earnestly by his guru, to be his successor as the Madhava-Peetadhipathi.
Preceding this by a divine intervention, one night Moolarama, the presiding deity of the Madhav Peetha (also means the monastic seat) appeared in the dream of both the guru and sishya (disciple, Venkatnath) that he is the most fit man as his successor. Venkanna Bhatta (as Venkatnath was also known) wanted to perform the upanayana (initiation into brahminhood) of his son which was in the way of his installation as Muttadhipathi (pontiff). To his wife's joy, he celebrated the upanayana and left for the King's court in Tanjore along with his guru and without the knowledge of his wife, Saraswathi. To carry out the divine bidding means giving up the family to lead an ascetic life. Hence he left to be installed as pontiff without informing Saraswathi.
At Tanjore, a royal welcome awaited the guru and sishya. Amidst great rejoicing Venkanna Bhatta was installed and called Swami Raghavendra Tirtha. His preceptor Sri Sudheendra Tirtha's heart was gladdened. Elsewhere a heart broken Saraswathi shocked at her husband becoming pontiff committed suicide. She turned into ghost for the sinful act. Sri Raghavendra Swamy taking pity on her tormented soul, released it to be united with the creator.
