Alampur,
known as the western gate of Srisailam, is in Mehboobnagar district.
It is one of the most sacred "Shaivite" centers in AP. Built in the
Kadamba Chalukyan style, the two groups of temples, called
Brahmeswara and Papanatham temples, are situated on the banks of the
Tungabhadra river on either side of Alampur village. It is a
paradise for tourists interested in archeological studies. An
important goddess of Alampur is Jogulamba - the vedic Yogeswari.
Another goddess, Renkua or Ellamma is popularly worshipped for
getting children.
LEGEND
According to the sthalapurana (local history) of Alampur,
there are fifty Theerthas, eighteen Maha Theerthas and sixty four
Ghats at this place. Among all the Theerthas, the Papavinasa
Theertha is considered to be the most sacred. It is said that the
six known sections of Hinduism - Kaumara and their sub-sections
flourished here. Alampur is known as Navabrahmeshwara Theertha. It
is believed that the nine temples of Bala, Kaumara, Arka, Veera,
Viswa, Garuda, Swarga, Padma and Taraka Brahmeswara were built by
the Brahma.
