Signification of bhavas

It is important to note that the first house of horoscope cast for an individual will be that which rises at the time of birth. It is called Lagna, Birth, Kalya, Thanu or first-house. The second house will be second to this and so on.

Lagna or Thanu Bhava -This denotes nature, ego, build, birth, maternal labour, soul, life, complexion and fame.

2nd House is Dhana Bhava Varaha Mihira calls it Swa or Kutumba and from this is known the wealth, right eye, power of speech, condition of the family, teeth, tongue, income, and ambition, food, neck and throat.

3rd House is referred as Bharathru Bhava :- Some times it is called vikrama bhava also. From this is known the strength of the family, brothers, sisters, courage, ears, relatives, truth, servants, anger, patience, short journeys and intellect.

4th House or Mathru Bhava:- Varaha Mihira calls it Bandhu bhava. From this we can tell all about the relations of the native, his mother, education, lands, conveyances, books, beds, cattle, medicines, morality, fidelity, friends, end of life, love, comfort and ornaments etc.

5th House or Putra Bhava :- This is called Budhi bhava also. This signifies intellect, children, brain, maternal uncle, pilgrimages, speculation, sexual affairs, astrology and other occult sciences, soul, father.

6th House or Satru Bhava :- This is referred to by some as Kashta bhava or Ari. This signifies one's enemies, debts, litigations, sickness, wounds, bad luck, ill-fame, selfishness. theft, dishonour, and night-blindness.

7th House or Dara Bhava :- This is referred to by some as Jamitra Chithota or Kalathra bhava. From this is signified one's marriage, love affairs, lost-property, passions, wife, sexual pleasures, sex-diseases, partnership, ambassador’s post, wild thoughts, speculation.

8th House or Marna Bhava :- This is called Ayur bhava or Randrabhava also. This denotes, nature of death, sins, destruction, punishment, private parts, operations, danger from poison, obstacles, sickness, accidents, murder, accusations, sorrow, money from partner, speculations, magnetism, witchcraft, and final exit.

9th House or Karma Bhava :-This is referred to as Shuba, Guru, and Thapas bhava etc. This signifies father, father’s wealth, charity, elders rituals, merit, kind-ness, philosophy, priesthood, renunciation, grand children, pilgrimages, yogic powers, and penance.

10th House or Karma Bhava :- This is referred to as Aspada, Agnya or residence. From this a Man's profession livelihood, service, respect, success, remunerations, reputation, merit, po1itical life, command and authority etc can be told.

11th House or Labha Bhava :- This is called Aya Bhava also.  This denotes gains, wealth, proficiency in language, education, willpower, hopes arrivals, elder brother, fate, patrons, intimacy, drinking habit, second wife, liquor shops, general success.

12th House or Vyaya Bhava :- This governs expenditure, left eye, enemies, difficulties, un-finished works, loss, hell, evil-spirits, and final moksha.

Here it must be remembered that. the significance of each bhava is increased or decreased according to the ownership of planets, which may be benefices or malefics. Ordinarily benefices enhance the results and the malefics are said to exert goof influence when they are posted in 3, 6, and 11th houses. In other houses they spoil the significance. This aspect is dealt in detail in 4th chapter. There is some difference in the significance of bhavas in western astrology. I do not propose to deal with this here as this book is based mainly to Hindu-system of astrology.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PLANETS

Before considering the effects of planets in different bhavas it is necessary to know the characteristics of every planet. This chapter deals with this subject.

1. Sun. Sun is the grandest and most powerful of all the planets. He is rightly called the Father of all planets, for it is this planet which imparts light and velocity to most of the planets One great astronomer says: “The Sun’s rays are the ultimate source of almost every motion which takes place on the surface of the earth. By its heat are produced all winds, and those disturbances in the electric equilibrium of the atmosphere which give rise to the phenomenon of lightening, and probably also to terrestrial action and aurora.” Every life on earth depends upon the rays of this great planet, nay the whole universal system depends on this all-powerful planet. It is quite natural then, the humanity comes under the influence of this planet. Now some of the inherent qualities of this planet are to be considered. Sun denotes copper colour, father, soul, atma, forests, deserts, lightening, deserts, headache, ego, mental derangements heat, east, magisterial power, destruction, creation, places of worship, day-time, gold, political success, doctors, appetite, coronation, fires, high fevers enteritis, royal tendencies and rulership; by nature a malefic.

2. Moon. This is one of the most beautiful and fascinating planet. It is the favourite of poets, philosophers, lovers and astrologers as well. Most of the important yogas are formed from the position of this planet in a horoscope. Besides the dasa and Gochara system of astrology depend mainly on the position of this planet.
