ANDHRA PRADESH

Horsley Hills : 144 Km.
From Tirupati, this delightful hill resort is named after W.D. Horsley, then collector of Cuddapah District.

Situated a an altitude of 1265 mts. with a maximum summer temp. of 320C and minimum 200C, this is an ideal summer resort.

Puttaparthi : 440 Km.
Located in Anantapur District this is the abode of Bhagavan Shri Satya Sai Baba

Anantagiri Hills : 62 Km.
A tiny hill resort with a sanitorium for tuberculosis patients. River Musi takes its birth here.

Basar : 273 Km.
The Temple of Saraswati at Basar is one the two famous Saraswati Temples in India, other being in Kashmir.

Bidar : 130 Km.
An ancient fort town in nearby Karnataka with excellent tombs of the Bahmani and Barid Shahi Kings.

Yadagirigutta : 69 Km.
One of the Vaishnavite Temple, Shrine of Narasimha Swamy, it attracts a large number of devotees.

Pochampally : 45 Km.
On the way to Vijayawada, this village is famous for its beautiful “IKAT” fabric and the world famous “Pochampally” Sarees.

Bhadrachalam : 300 Km.
There is a famous temple dedicated to Sri Setha Ramachandraswamy, where the 48 forms of Vishnu are shown.

JEWELS AROUND VISAKHA

Simhachalam

The Simhachalam temple, has been hailed as the most famous, the richest, the best sculptured shrine in the district. The temple is picturesquely situated on a hill 800 ft. above main sea level in the hill range of eastern ghats, and a distance of 6 kms form Simhachalam Railway station on the S E Railway line. Private buses ply regularly to take pilgrims from Visakhapatnam to Simhachalam. The architecture and sculptures of the temples are a feast to the eye of one who is interested in these subjects. The inscriptions of the temple (about 525 in all) are indispensable for the study of history and culture of the region.

Dolphins Nose

Is the most conspicuous and unforgettable landmark in Visakhapatnam. A single, massive 358 mts. rock breaks the coastline and again juts into the sea resembling a dolphin.

Ramakrishna Beach

This is a very popular beach which derives its name from a temple of lord Rama and Krishna. All kinds of people come here who unwind and enjoy with their families. On a full moon night the whole beach and unending sea transforms into a silver sheen ad is a sight to behold and cherish.

Port Channel

This channel cutting through an undulating terrain as on one side, three hills which emphasis the lovely topography of Visakhapatnam. Ross hill the highest mount named after Mr. Ross, local authority, who built a house on it in 1864. This was later converted into Roman Catholic Chapel and named “Our Lady of the Sacred Heart”. Darga Konda, has a mosque and a shrine of a Muslim sage Iashaque Madina, who was revered for his prophecies. Sri Venkateshwara Konda, has a temple which was built by Capt. Blackmoor in 1886.

Rishikonda Beach

Green and picturesque, this beach strips falls besides the road from to Bhimili with massive sand dunes creating a spectacular geographical formation which supposedly reminds one of the famous Covalam Beach in Goa. This is a favourite amongst holiday makers.

Hindustan Shipyard

The Nations biggest ship building yard is located at Gandhigram at Vizag. The shipyard has tour berths, each 167.6 mts. long. It is a good educational and entertaining visit.

Kailasagiri

Developed by Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA), this place particularly attracts nature lovers. It rises a majestic 304 mts to present a breath taking scenery. The hill has seven vantage points from which one can see the whole of Visakha in its splendor. A truly spectacular panorama!

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park

This is the second Zoological Park in the State after the one in Hyderabad. This zoo is the largest in terms of area with an encompassing area of 450 acres full of exotic species of animals and birds amidst rolling landscapes of natural habitat. Half of this wilderness has been allotted for the deer park. The other 300 types of specimens are allowed to roam freely in huge enclosures. There is a separate enclosure called the crocodile park.

Andhra University

4 kms from Visakhapatnam, this legendary educational institution was opened in 1926 and is famous for its massive stone buildings.

Bheemunipatnam

Bheemunipatnam, the mandal headquarters is situated at a distance of 30 kms from Vizag. It is one of the oldest municipalities in the country and first in the state, having been established as early as 1861 A.D. Being the settlement of the Dutch, any visitor can till see a fort, and a cemetery belonging to the 17th century A.D. The temple of Sri Narasimha Swamy is on the sea.
