ANDHRA PRADESH

Government archaelogical Museum : 15 Km.
A museum with interesting sections on Prehistoric implements, Sculptures. Paintings, Inscriptions, illuminated manuscripts, Coins, Old arms, Bidriware, Old China and Textiles.

Near by is the Ajanta pavilion where full size copies of the Ajanta Frescos and wall paintings are on display.

Lumbini Park : 1 Km.
A new amusement park near Hussain Sagar, this has a musical fountain show at 6.30 p.m. and 8.00 p.m. open from Tuesday to Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

AROUND THE STATE
(Distances from Hyderabad)

 Medak : 100 Km.
This is the site of a beautiful cathedral, one of the largest in the country. Built in Gothic style with coloured stained glass windows, this is truly a remarkable structure. This cathedral is 60.96 metres high and accommodates 5,000 people.

Warangal : 157 Km.
The fifth largest city of Andhra, this place is known for its beautiful lakes, splendid temples and wildlife. The famous “Thousand Pillar Temple” built in 1163 A.D. By Rudra Deva, is situates near the Hanumakonda – Warangal Highway. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Surya. One thousand richly carved pillars and a monolithic black Nandi are unique to this temple.

64 Km. from Warangal, is the “Ramappa Temple” at Palampet, which dates back to 1234 A.D. This temple is famous for its rich, intricate sculpture covered walls, pillar brackets and ceilings.

At Kolanupaka, the mid point between Hyderabad and Warangal, stands a 2000 year Old “Jain Mahavir Temple”, with a 1.5 m high Jade image of Mahavir. Other famous Temple and Kolanupaka site museum near by, are also worth visiting.

“Warangal fort”, 12 Km. from Hanumakonda, was built during the 13th Century by the Kakatiyas. The four huge stone gateways and several exquisite pieces of sculptures can still be seen.

 50 Km. From Warangal, arid peaceful forested hills, is the manmade “Pakhal Lake”, completed in 1213 A.D. 90 acres around its shoreline is the “Pakhal Sanctuary” which is home for Tiger, Leopard, Bear, Hyena, Deer and other wild life. Season – October to March.

Nagarjuna Sagar and Nagarjuna Konda : 150 Km.
The multipurpose “Nagarjuna Sagar” project is named after the famous Buddhist Scholar Nagarjunacharya. This is important Buddhist site. The relics of the Buddhist Civilisation, that were excavated here, are housed in a museum on the “Nagarjuna Konda”. Also there, is a model of the now submerged valley and the environs.

11 Km Downstream, is the beautiful “Ethipothala Falla”. The Chandravanka stream here plunges from a height of 21.3 meters, into a lagoon.

Srisailam : 232 Km.
South of Hyderabad, situated along the banks of river Krishna is Srisailam. The 512 metre long Srisailam dam is located here. On a 457 metre high hill, is the famous Bramarambha Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple. The presiding deity is one of the 12 ‘Jyotirlingams’ in India, and the only one in the state.

The “Srisailam wildlife sanctuary” is famous for Tigers, Panthers, Spotted deer, Giant Squirrels, Great lizards, Pangolins, Crocodiles, Civets and varieties snakes.

Vijayawada : 280 Km.
Vijayawada is situated between the Krishna river and its tributary Budameru.


         
The temple of “Goddess Kanaka Durga”, on he Indrakila Hill, is a place wort visiting. The Mogalarajapuram Caves near Vijayawada have 3 cave Temples.

60 Km. From Vijayawada, is “Kuchipudi” the birth place of Siddhendra Yogi, originator of the famous Kuchipudi dance.

Located 50 Km. from Vijayawada, “Amaravati” was one o the four important places of Buddhist worship in the Country. This is the site of the “Mahastupa” measuring 36.5 metres wide and 16.5 metres high.

16 Km. from Vijayawada, is “Kondapalli”, the home of beautiful Kondapalli toys.

“Kolleru Lake” is 95 Km. from Vijayawada. This big sweet water lake attracts several species of birds, 8 Km. off shore of the lake is the famous, “Kolleru pelicanry”.

Visakhapatnam : 648 Km.
Once a small fishing village, is now a major tourist attraction. The “Dolphin’s Nose”, a rocky promontory in the port, 358 metres high, is a famous landmark. 16 Km. from Visakhapatnam is the famous “Simhachalam” Temple of Lord Narsimha. 24 Km. from Visakhapatnam, at the mouth of river Gosthani, is “Bheemunipatanam”, a beach resort of sylvanic beauty. “Rishikonda” is another golden unsploit beach.

112 Km. from Vishakhapatnam is “Araku Valley”, the home for 17 colourful tribes. The Valley is rich in Coffee and Mango plantations.

90 Km. from Vishakhapatnam, on the road to Araku Valley, is the “Borra Caves”, One million years old, these caves have magnificent stalactite and stalagmite formations. 48 Km. from Vishakhapatnam, is the famous “Kondakarla Bird Sanctuary”, home for many species of birds.

Tirupathi : 562 Km.
This temple town of Tirupathi, marks the location of one of the most venerated shrines in India, that of Lord Venkateshwara at Tirumala. Tirumala has Seven Hills, representing the seven heads of serpent.

11 Km. from Tirupati, built on a 56 metre high rock is the “Chandragiri fort”, strong hold of the Vijayanagar Empire.

36 Km. from Tirupathi, at “Sri Kalahasti”, is the famous temple of Lord Shiva in the form of Vayu Linga.

Lepakshi : 480 Km.
Easily accessible from Tirupati, this religious center has some of the finest temple architecture and painting. The famous Veerabhadra temple is located here.
